How to Take Better Photographs
A guide to improving the quality of your amateur photography, including such techniques as filling the frame, maximizing contrast, and using proper outdoor lighting.
Rule #1: Fill the Frame
One of the most common mistake when taking photographs is to place the main subject of the photograph directly in the center of the frame in the camera's window. The inevitable result is half a frame of boring blue sky above the photograph's subject in the middle of the picture. A much more effective way to take high quality photographs is to lower the camera somewhat so that the subject of the photo will fill the entire frame of the photograph. This creates for a much more dynamic and interesting photograph and ensures that the intended subject is the focus of the photograph instead of monochromatic blue sky.
Rule #2: Contrast is Key
Creating contrast in one's pictures is the key to quality photography. Contrast can be made with contrasting colors, contrasting shapes, contrasting subjects, etc. But in all cases, a photograph that is completely devoid of contrast would not be much of a photograph of all. Before snapping that prizewinning photo, ask yourself whether there is a way to maximize the contrast in the picture. The increase in contrast will be more striking to the eye and more interesting for the mind of whomever views your masterpiece photograph. One of my favorite techniques is to offset the photo slightly or include a contrasting element or object in the photograph's foreground or background. Remember that even though a photograph is printed on two dimensional paper, it is still a representation of a three dimensional world. Anything you can do to give the photograph depth will also all to the contrast of the photo.
Rule #3: Use Proper Lighting (e.g. No Noonday Photos)
Another very common mistake in amateur photography is to use improper lighting at the wrong angle. High noon is the worst time to take photographs outdoors because the sun directly overhead creates shadows downward across human faces. Often the photograph will appear to be washed out if you take photographs in the noonday sun. Dawn and dusk are the best times to take photographs outdoors because the sun's light is hitting objects at a string forward angle as long as the objects are positioned to face the rising or setting sun. In addition the colored light of a sunrise or a sunset will add to the color contrast of the photograph as recommended in rule #2 above. Simply by paying attention that the lighting is shining directly at the front of whatever your photographic subject is will ensure that your photograph is well lit and free from being washed out by noonday sun or free of downward shadows from light coming directly from above.
In conclusion, if you pay conscious attention to filling the photograph's frame, maximizing contrast, and ensuring proper lighting at the right time of day, then your photographs will go a long way toward becoming of professional caliber.
