How to Clean Mildew from Surfaces in Your Home
Mildew is gross and can be dangerous to your health. Here is a guide to cleaning mildew from the surfaces in your home.
You will need the following items:
A pair of rubber gloves
A spray bottle
A bottle of liquid chlorine bleach
A plastic bristled scrub brush
Water
A clean, dry cloth
The first thing that you need to do is to put on the gloves.
In the spray bottle, mix one (1) part bleach to 15 parts water. Make sure that you do not mix the bleach with anything other than water. Also make sure that your bathroom is well ventilated. If your bathroom is in the middle of a house where it is not well ventilated, make sure that the doors can stay open and that air can freely flow in and out. You may even want to use a fan to be able to blow the air out of the bathroom and into a ventilated area.
Spray the bleach and water solution directly onto all the mildew stains, even if they are difficult to see. All mildew stains need to be removed.
After you have sprayed the bleach and water solution onto the mildew stains, let it sit for at least five (5) minutes. It is okay if it sits a little bit longer, but do not let it sit for too long.
Scrub the mildew stained areas with the plastic bristled brush. Make sure that you scrub them well. Then rinse the areas with water. You may need a sponge for some areas if they are flat and not near your shower or your shower does not have a flexible shower head.
For small areas, use an old toothbrush that you will only use for cleaning. If you only have your toothbrush, do not use it unless you are planning on using that toothbrush for cleaning and going out to buy a new toothbrush before you brush your teeth.
Mildew grows in moist environments. Run an air conditioner or a dehumidifier. This may even prevent mildew from growing in the first place.
Now wipe the treated areas with the dry cloth to make sure that they are dry. While you just cleaned mildew away, if left wet, mildew will be encouraged to grow in the same areas again.
This is not how you get rid of mildew from fabrics such as shower curtains, towels, wash cloths, or any clothes that may be in the bathroom.
For that, you need to take the fabric outside and brush off the mildew. Then use color safe bleach in your washer to wash the item and if possible, dry it in the sun.
