Viewing more than 1,000, 000 Christmas lights, or watching popular Christmas favorites, such as a Christmas Carol, and the Nutcracker Ballet are some of the ways to celebrate Christmas in Toledo, Ohio, this year.
One of the most popular annual attractions during the Christmas season, from November 17 to December 31, is the Lights Before Christmas show at the Toledo Zoo, featuring more than 1,000,000 lights. The display features more than 200 images of favorite animals, ice carving demonstrations on Thursday evenings, carolers, holiday treats, and visits with Santa in the Indoor Theater. Unique souvenirs and gifts are available in the North Star Trading Post. The event has become a family Christmas tradition in Toledo.
The dynamic Dancing Lights show will be back by popular demand as a part of the attraction. The show uses state-of-the-art wide-angle mini lights. The show will be repeated throughout each evening for visitors' convenience will be synchronized to classic holiday tunes.
The show will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 5 to 9 p.m. from Friday to Sunday. Admission is $9 for those from 12-59, $6 for those older than 60 and those from 2-11, and free for those younger than 2. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens has become a favorite book, movie (with many versions), and play. Almost anyone can relate to an employee who works for a Scrooge-like character who drives his employees like slaves, and has little regard for holiday seasons-even Christmas. We might not know anyone who has ever been visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, or Future, but the characters are interesting. Of course, everyone loves to see the hard-hearted Scrooge turn into a loving, compassionate human being in the end.
The play will be performed in the Stranahan Theater on December 8, 9, and 10. Another way to celebrate Christmas is to see the popular classic, The Nutcracker Ballet. The ballet is based on the story of The Nutcracker and the King of Mice by E.T.A. Hoffman. The basic plot remains the same, although what is shown on stage today is different in detail from the original story. In the story, a young German girl dreams of a Nutcracker Prince and a fierce battle against a Mouse King with seven heads.
The ballet includes a party scene at the Stahlbaum house-a grand house with the most beautiful tree one can imagine. In the scene, a toymaker's two life-sized dolls begin to dance.
In the Fight Scene, an army of toy soldiers fights with mice.
In the Land of Sweets there are a variety of dances, including: the Spanish Dance; the Arabian Dance; the Russian Dance; the Chinese Dance; the Mirliton Dance; and the Waltz of the Flowers.
The Nutcracker Ballet will be performed at the Stranahan Theater on December 16 and 17. The shows on December 16 will be at 2 and 7 p.m. The shows on December 17 will be at 1:30 and 4:30 p.m.
The Toledo Symphony will also be performing a Christmas Event at various times and locations. Some of the concerts are listed as the annual Messiah.
