Fleas and Ticks - A Summertime Worry No More Thanks to Adam's Flea and Tick Collar
One of the first products I had to purchase shortly after arriving in a warmer and more humid climate was the Adams Flea and Tick Collar. It worked wonderfully for very little cost.
I purchased my Adams Flea Collars at Big Lots, for a fraction of the cost that other stores were offering flea and tick collars. They were offered in several different colors but only sold in two sizes: one for large dogs and one for medium dogs. The large size fits dogs with neck sizes up to 25 inches. The medium size fits neck sizes up to 15 inches. They also have a smaller size available for cats - which I may purchase next time as it may be the right size.
These collars feature a dual action construction that offers protections normally associated with a powder combined with those normally associated with a spray. The inside of the collar acts like a powder and the outside a spray; offering a double edged attack against fleas and ticks. A sustained release system gradually transfers the active ingredients to your dog's fur and skin, helping to eliminate fleas and ticks and keep them from coming back.
This flea collar should be attached around a dog's neck with about two or three inches of excess collar for future adjustments. Any other excess should be trimmed off with sharp scissors. The collar is waterproof and works for up to six months.
This flea collar contains the following Active Ingredients: O-Isopropoxyphenyl methylcarbamate 9%, *3-Phenooxybenzyl d-cis and trans **2,2 dimethyl-3- (2-methylpropenyl) cyclopropanecarboxylate 3%, and N-Octyl bicycloheptene diacarboxmide 3%, with other ingredients contributing 85%.
Adams is a brand name for dog supplies and flea and tick control are its specialty. I became familiar with Adams just shortly after our arrival when both of my dogs started scratching at every opportunity. For some reason, they seem to be more susceptible to fleas since our relocation and one of our dogs has sensitive skin so many other options for the treatment of fleas and ticks is not available to us.
I purchased one large size for my larger size dog and one medium size collar for my smallest dog. The first slight problem I had with these collars was getting them to fit my West Highland White Terrier properly. Since Adams sells medium and large, I had to make some adjustments. Thus, if you have a smaller than average breed, you may have excessive "hang" with these collars. My Westie recently had his summer clip at the groomers. Therefore there is quite a bit of excess collar and while we have been able to work around it, it would be nice if Adams offered a smaller size. It seems very wasteful to trim off such a large piece of collar. I could almost make two collars out of one and I would if it was possible.
How effective are Adams Flea and Tick collars? Well, it is difficult to make a perfect assessment of a flea collar because there is no way to know exactly how bad the flea problem was before and after. All one can do is observe the dogs and see if they continue to scratch. And from my experience, it looks like these collars have fulfilled their task. Even a good run in the yard for and extended period of time doesn't result in any scratching once back indoors. No scratching or other form of irritation gesture means the fleas are gone.
Adams claims these collars have a "Fresh Powder Scent"; however, I was at times immediately overwhelmed by the scent of the flea collar upon entering my home. It smells like flea powder, which definitely is not fresh smelling. The scent decreased after several days and then after about two weeks of wear it was difficult to detect at all except after handling the dogs particularly at the collar area. But the remaining scent was no worse than the remaining scent a human has after a good dose of "Off." Washing my hands thoroughly alleviated the scent so, it is easily removable.
Adams Flea and Tick collars are designed to last a good long time- up to six months, which means I shouldn't have to purchase a monthly flea and tick collar treatment, even in the humid and warm Houston environment. The collars are waterproof also, and this is a good quality considering I live in an area where it has rained about every day of the week since my arrival and the pool is a good way of cooling the dogs off. Adams Flea and Tick Collars are significantly less expensive than other flea collars, costing less than five dollars each.
Adams Flea and Tick collars are not intended for dogs under 12 weeks of age. But they are fine for all other dogs, young and old, large and small, and they effectively fight the common problems associated with fleas and ticks. They won't necessarily kill fleas dead like a strong flea spray but they will prevent more fleas from setting up camp on your dog's skin. They are a very good buy for the quality they offer and I would definitely recommend them for any dog owner concerned about the effects of fleas and ticks on their little animal friends.
